Mark Sampson
Mark Sampson hails from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. His interest in dance stems from obsessively watching a VHS recording of River Dance starring Michael Flatley at the age of 3. He began his professional dance training at age 14 in Toronto at the National Ballet School of Canada's Ballet Academic Program. Following a year at NBS Mark continued his professional studies at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Currently Mark studies dance and choreography at the Juilliard School where he has had the opportunity to perform works by José Limón, Twyla Tharp, Merce Cunningham, Camille A. Brown, Brian Brooks, Kate Weare and Kyle Abraham. Most recently Mark was selected to represent the Juilliard School at the José Limón International Dance Festival performing the trio, Concerto Grosso at the Joyce Theater in NYC. He has also performed excerpts of new creations by Kate Weare and Kyle Abraham at the Guggenheim Museum as part of the Guggenheim Works and Process. Outside of Juilliard, Mark has participated in Springboard Danse Montreal where he has worked with choreographers such as Fernando Melo, Sylvain Emard. Yin Yue and, Jonathan Campbell and Austin Diaz (MADboots dance co.)
In his choreography Mark is interested in exploring personal questions through surrealist narratives. He is deeply inspired by the visual arts and starts most of his processes by questioning a specific photograph, painting or film. His work has won numerous awards and has been featured as part of the National Ballet School of Canada's Assemblée Internationale 2013. In the summer of 2014 Mark received a Grant from the PEI 2014 fund to create an evening-length dance work to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first meeting of the Fathers of Confederation of Canada. The following year he created Home Scene as part of the Juilliard School's Choreographers and Composers concert collaborating with composer Nathan Prillaman. He is now choreographing a new piece to be premiered at Senior Production, a show of 7 new creations being produced by the senior class of the Juilliard School.
Outside of dance Mark enjoys watching Documentaries, Baking and exploring the many museums of New York.
