We are back at Juilliard in tech and dress rehearsals for our Spring Reparatory performances being premiered this week. These shows come at a really busy time for us seniors as most of us have our schedules packed with auditions for various companies or shows. Luckily enough we have just arrived back from our Spring break feeling rejuvenated and ready to fully focus on these wonderful works we are about to perform.
I reflect back to spring break as this year it feels as if as a class we have not slowed down since September, going from project to project and audition after audition. I truly have learned to value any free time I can grasp. I have also learned that any opportunity that may come up, whether it be an audition or a masterclass, may help to start building a network of companies and choreographers who inspire me. This means I sadly can’t fall into the habit of becoming yet another spring break couch potato. There is a definite balanced that must be achieved.
For me the relaxation side of the metaphorical spring break teeter totter came very easily as I was lucky to find the time to go home to Prince Edward Island Canada. My weeks were spent with great company enjoying good food and maybe a little too much wine. I was able to pour over books for hours on end not worrying about how much time has passed. I cooked leisurely savouring every bite of my creations. I went out to Pubs with my friends and family enjoying curry and chips with a pints of Guinness. This is my Utopia, minus the wintery winds that come with living in the Maritimes of Canada.
Obviously I had to counter act all of the indulgences in order to maintain the balance and remain prepared for both my return to school and for any exciting opportunities. I am very lucky to have access to a gym that offers a large variety of classes which helped me do something physical every day. I would take yoga every second day as it is a low impact way to keep my body moving and maintain flexibility. On the days I was not in Yoga I would do something to get my blood pumping which would usually be a spin class or half an hour on the elliptical. I was also lucky to be approached by a local dance school asking for me to teach a couple workshops which I was more than happy to take on. It forced me to get in the studio and dance as well as providing me with a little extra money (which was drained immediately into my various indulgences).
I had enjoyed my spring break immensely but I left feeling rejuvenated from my well balanced spring break ready to take on the tasks at hand. Time is flying this year, it is hard to believe we are on stage this week for our last reparatory performances at Juilliard. Hope to see you there!
