Setting Sail
As an artist, I cringe at the thought of beginning our first Senior Production blog post with a cliché statement about the passing of time. Yet, after much thought, it feels inevitable. So here it goes. It is unfathomable to me how quickly time passes. This year, each day in the studio I look around at my classmates and think,
“How did we all get to be seniors? We will be graduating before we know it. I need to find a job! I will miss seeing these faces so much.”
Whenever I get lost in these worries or sentimental thoughts, I often snap back to the present the moment as I hear my group called to dance, realizing I never learned the combination. Being in this situation is the perfect (and embarrassing) reminder to not get ahead of myself and to live in the now. It’s safe to say that the entire senior class has some apprehension about what the future brings. For now, it is such a gift that we still get to dance, live, and learn alongside each other.
What a journey it has been studying at Juilliard. My time here has been filled with wonderful highs and incredibly challenging obstacles. Of all the lessons I have learned, perhaps the greatest is the importance of staying in the moment and to be fully present with those around you. To help us document each moment as we work towards our Senior Production and to keep you updated about special moments that happen throughout the process, we would like to invite you backstage to Senior Production 2016.
Senior Production is a yearlong course in which the graduating dancers create, fundraise and produce an original dance concert. The class helps to bridge the gap between life as a student and that of a professional dancer, choreographer, and producer. This year our show will premiere the works of 7 emerging choreographers and feature over 40 dancers from the junior and senior classes. The concert will take place in Juilliard’s Willson Theater April 2016. Until then, every Monday morning this year, on the 5th floor, you will find our class brainstorming, debating, drafting and planning. To fundraise for our show, we will be hosting a silent auction at our annual New Dances concert this December, selling tasty treats at our bake sales during the Juilliard dance Workshop performances, and producing and selling a class calendar (I would love to tell you about our recent photo shoot… but for now it’s a secret. All will be revealed soon in a future post.)
Each week on this website, a different member of the class 2016 will contribute a new entry to this blog. We will be sharing the inside scoop about Senior Production, life as a Juilliard dance student, and more. Stay tuned! The time is flying by and there is so much work to do!
Anchors away. Senior Production is setting sail!
